Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the Androscoggin Fallen Angels (AFA)?
The Androscoggin Fallen Angels (est. 2015) is an open-gender, flat track roller derby league based in Lewiston, ME. We're also a skater-operated non-profit that is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space within our sport & community. We firmly believe in empowering skaters of all backgrounds and skill levels; there’s a place for everybody in derby -- skating and hitting optional!
What is roller derby?
Roller derby is a full contact sport played on quad roller skates. You can learn all about the gameplay and the rules on the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) website: WFTDA Roller Derby Basics
What if I don’t know how to skate or have no athletic background?
At AFA, we do not require any prior skating/athletic experience to join us. We pride ourselves on allowing skaters to progress at their own pace; no harsh deadlines or “come back later”. We’re happy to have you with us no matter where you’re at, and we’ll work with you to get you to where you want to be.
Am I too old/small/big/weak/out of shape/(insert insecurity here) to do roller derby?
Nope! Derby is unique in that all body types have value and advantages. It’s also not at all uncommon to join roller derby later in life and absolutely crush it. Of course, building up strength and endurance along the way is important, but we don’t expect everyone to come in ready to play. Cross-training is extremely beneficial and encouraged for all skaters regardless of their starting point — you’ll make progress so much faster!
Am I going to get hurt?
The roller derby of today has evolved significantly from its wild roots. There are many rules and regulations in place to keep the game as safe as possible, however, there is absolutely a risk of injury, as with any contact sport. This is why we wear safety gear, have applicable insurance, and complete safety checks/assessments throughout training.
What do I need in order to join as a skater?
First, you need to be 18 years of age or older. Next, you’ll need:
Quad roller skates (no inlines/blades)
Well-fitting helmet
Hard-capped wrist guards, elbow pads, and knee pads
Mouthguard
Enthusiasm and a willingness to try new challenging things!
For more detailed information about skates and gear + our recommendations, you can check out our Nuts & Bolts section.
How much does all this cost?
Before we get into the cost breakdown, don’t forget to check out the linked Nuts & Bolts page above. It includes information about secondhand shopping, loaner gear, and discounts. We don’t want finances to be a barrier between you and your new favorite hobby!
League dues: Currently, our skating members (excluding officials) pay league dues of $40.00 per month. At this time, there is no fee for both skating & non-skating officials, as we greatly appreciate the work they do and they can be hard to come by! ##WeLoveOfficials
Insurance: If you’re joining as a skating member, you’ll need to purchase WFTDA Insurance (WFTDI), which is usually around $80-$100 for the year. *You don’t need this before you start
New entry-level derby skates from a solid brand: $150-$250
Protective pads: Three pack value sets (elbow/wrist/knee) are generally the most affordable and range from $30-$100+
Quality helmet: $50-$175
Mouth guard $5-$25 — and beyond if you go the custom route through a dentist
I’m under 18. What options are available to me?
We hold a 6-week learn-to-skate program for kids aged 6-16 twice a year in the fall and spring through the Lewiston Recreation Department.
Unfortunately, we don’t have a super local junior derby league, but there’s one in Manchester, New Hampshire, and another up in The County run by Aroostook Roller Derby.
If none of those options work for you, we are fortunate to have a local roller rink, the Rollodromein Auburn, as well as Happy Wheels in Westbrook. Outdoor skating is also a great way to get good at skating quickly — just make sure to wear safety gear!
I have more questions/I’m ready to roll!
We love to hear it! Shoot us a message on Facebook or Instagram, or if social media isn’t your thing, you can email us at AFARollerDerby@gmail.com. You’re also welcome to drop by a practice to see what we’re all about — just give us a heads up so we know to expect you.
